World Autism Acceptance Month

April is World Autism Acceptance Month, a time for our school community to come together to celebrate neurodiversity, increase understanding, and foster a truly inclusive environment for all students.

Why “Acceptance”?

While “Awareness” shines a light on autism, we are focusing on Acceptance—ensuring that Autistic individuals in Canada are respected, heard, and supported for who they are.

How We Are Celebrating:

  • Thursday, April 2nd (World Autism Acceptance Day): We encourage students to wear BLUE or tie dye and participate in school-wide activities focused on kindness and acceptance.
  • Announcements, bulletin boards, classroom stories, and lessons: Educators will utilize resources from Autism Ontario to explore neurodiversity, celebrate diverse perspectives, and foster empathy. Key themes include:
    • An overview of Autism and Neurodiversity.
    • Lessons on friendship, featuring specialized games during gym class for FDK and Primary students.
    • Communication styles, explored through activities like partner art projects.
    • Sensory processing insights.
    • Strategies for managing stress and emotional regulation.

Get Involved:

We encourage families to learn more about the Framework for Autism in Canada and the new National Autism Strategy designed to improve support services.

Special thank you to Ms. Mikkelsen, our Special Education Teachers, Educational Workers and Special Education Intervenors,  for their assistance and dedication to our students.

Let’s work together to make our community a place where every child feels they belong.
